Pictish Stone Meditation
Settle in for a few quiet minutes with the carved symbols of the Pictish stones. Choose a pattern, follow the breath, and add a soft tone if you'd like one. Everything here is free, made by John, and the sound is generated live in your browser. Nothing is downloaded and nothing starts until you tap.
Quick start
Tap one, then press Begin. You can still change anything below afterwards.
Tip for beginners: start with First time, sit comfortably and keep the volume low. Headphones are optional.
Sound off. Turn it on in the Sound panel, or meditate in silence.
Draw a rune first (optional)
Pick one of John's 53 runes at random and hold its meaning gently in mind while you breathe. You can skip this.

Past reflections
Pattern
Spirals carved on Pictish stones and at Newgrange, turning slowly inward and out.
Breath and time
Breathing pace
Session length
A soft chime sounds at the end, and any tone fades out gently.
Sound
Shifts the whole sound up or down, up to an octave either way.
Binaural beat (headphones)
🎧 Use headphones: each ear hears a slightly different tone. Never use binaural beats while driving or operating machinery.
Background
Start low and turn it up slowly. The sound fades in and out so it never starts suddenly.
Drum
Inspired by the symbol stones — no Pictish music survives, so these rhythms are our own.
Off. Choose a pattern to add a soft, deep drum under any tone or background.
The drum plays during your session, or tap Play drum to hear it on its own. It fades in and out.
A few quiet minutes
Sit or lie comfortably. Let your eyes rest on the carving and follow the circle as it widens on the in-breath and settles on the out-breath. If your thoughts wander, notice it, and come back to the line of the stone. There's nothing to get right.
The Picts carved these symbols into standing stones across the north. Their meaning is still a mystery, which makes them a good place to rest the mind. You might hold a question gently while you breathe, then draw a rune afterwards to reflect on it.
Guided meditation with John
Would you like to be talked through it? In a guided meditation, John's voice leads you through about ten to twelve quiet minutes: settling beside a standing stone, following a carved spiral inward with the breath, and resting with one of the 53 Pictish-inspired runes before gently coming back.
- Spoken by John, as a recording or live.
- Soft tones fade in and out underneath, made on this page.
- For relaxation and reflection only.
